512mb ram showing only 256mb :(

Hi today I purchased a 512mb ram(DDR hynix PC400), but it is showing only 256mb on bootup and also on system properties.

My pc is a old celeron 1.70ghz, 845gv gigabyte, 160gbhdd, etc.

Help.

But they tested it on pentium4, and it was working fine, means showing 504mb.

try puttin it in another slot and c wat happens
also increase d CAS latency in BIOS [like from 1.5 -> 2/2.5] and c if it works

also duz ur mobo support ram runnin @ 400MHz? [altho dis last thin appears not 2 b d prob]

dude some is reserved for display ram.....

check hw much is allocated to vid mem....tho i dnt think it will be 256...

I have a 845 too and my Ram is also 504. rest 8 mb is reserved as video memory. (sure u know how onboard grafix take some system ram.).

@thread poster : Take your RAM to dealer and replace it.

I think they cheated me, i took this ram to my friends place....there too it was showing 256. Then I took out his 512ram(transcend DDR 400) and put it in my pc and was working like a charm.

Crap my waste of Bus fares .

I will definately replace it. Now i am confirmed.

hmm....ask any hardware expect be4 jumping to conclusions...But at first I thought that there was a prob with the freq but now u say that its working fine...The question is whether the ram is ddr1 or ddr2, I don't think ddr2 will run on ur PC..check up man

Its DDR1, the dealer asked the pion twice to grab DDR1 from their stock.

Ok got the Ram replaced. Now OK.
Actually it was the whole LOT supply having the same problem. Not only me, many complained the same and got it replaced.
