Windows XP would be better in the current scenario. Further, rather than using a streamed down version of Vista, better to use a full fledged XP.

Go for XP now. There is enuf time to migrate to vista later. There is not just any BIG things gonna happen in Vista world. SO hold ur horses and go for XP.
Eventually most of us wud migrate to vista maybe after SP1.

^^
U can definitely run aero on 512MB RAM. It doesn't run by default but just looking for aero in help will show you how to enable it.

BTW, Vista Home Basic doesn't have aero.

Use XP, All features of Vista won't work unless you have 1 GB of RAM. You would get a faster speed with XP on a PC with 512 MB RAM.
