Ubuntu on External HDD to use across Laptops

Hi,

I have an external HDD (200GB), wherein I have already partitioned 10GB for installing Ubuntu (my first Linux OS).

I now want to install Ubuntu on this partition using my official Laptop (which is working) and then use that external HDD on my personal Laptop (which is having Windows XP Booting problem & its internal hard disk is about to crash) and boot onto Ubuntu -- thereafter I need to copy some of the important files on my personal laptop to the External Hard Disk (sort of trying to recover some of those files).

Here are my queries:
#1. Read the threads like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=179902 in the Ubuntu forum as well as http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/01...b-x-ubuntu-610 -- Now the pendrivelinux states ubuntu 6.10 has to be used as 7.04 has a persistent feature issue... Is this still the case?

#2. Is there a better site available giving a step-by-step instruction for a linux new-bie to install linux on an external drive and use it across computers?

#3. I do not want anything to happen to my office laptop -- at any cost -- but that's the only working thing I got now to install ubuntu on the external HDD... What kind of precautions should I take (apart from backups)?

#4. My ultimate motive is to use this linux on External HDD to retrieve the files from personal laptop -- would there be any restrictions on accessing the HDD on the personal laptop? Is there any specific permission setup that has to be given?

Would appreciate any help on this regard.

you can install on external hdd.make sure when u boot Ubuntu Live cd(u dont need to install this,os works directly from the CD drive itself-depending on ur system ram),open a terminal and run below command to detect ur partitions and hdd's correctly.it shows 200GB ext hdd too.so run this command when on live-session.make sure ur laptop bios to make first boot device priority to CD/DVD drive.
u can open a terminal by right click on desktop free area and "open terminal" or use menu Applications>Accessories>Terminal.
