where do OS and other programs keep the passwords of users hidden?

any ways its usually stored in encrypted format...and it also depends program in use for the way the password it stored

If u r talking about windows (XP) it is encrypted in SAM file located @ <System root>\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM

& it is in /etc/passwd in case of Linux
