Default RAM Different Modules

I have a pair of 256 MB DDR 400 Ram. I want to add a single 512 MB Ram. Will this effect my Pc performance. I know that it is better to have four 256 Ram in dual mode. But since i have already purchased and using 256 MB ram and since the price of 512 module has fallen to the knees, I'm thinking of adding a single pair of 512 MB Ram with the existing configuration. Suggest.
Will there will be any problem using 256 and 512 modules of Ram of different combination?

Then how about taking that 256 off and adding another 512

But then you are not using the system to the max... Check the final speeds for RAM, It shd be 266MHz(the lowest of 2 rams...)
