you need to encode d original uncompressed video file using a suitable codec and a software.
d size of your final product will depend on

1.) Length of ur vdo
2.) bitrate at which u encode d audio @ vdo

lower d bitrate lower will b d space occupied, but also poorer will d qlty of outcome

as a thumb rule an original DVD ripped as a 2 cd file will give u an as ner 2 original o/p [opinions will wary, but speaking from personal experiance]

Tools dat shud get u started

1.Virtualdubmod (personal fave)

2.Autogordianknot

3.Super

in case, u plan 2 use Virtualdubmod
u will have 2 install a codec pack
you could use K-lite Mega Codec Pack

T0 rip data from DVDs you cud use DVD Decrypter

From VCDs u cud use VCD Gear

One on d best resources for ripping tips wold be d Doom9 forum

hope dis info is nuf 2 get u started HAPPY RIPPING

u can get 13 movies in one dvd--believe me --can be done
just get an axxo rip and then convert it to rmvb format--800 mb movie shriks to 340 mb (approx) with 5-7 % loss of quality-(approx-as per my opinion)
use easy real media producer
