Question VERY Peculiar Problem

i have a very peculiar problem

my second computer's config is

Intel Pentiun III 733 Mhz
Intel i810 Chipset on a Vintron Motherboard
Samsung 80GB Harddrive
Samsung 20GB Harddrive
IBM 512 Mb RAM (256 X 2)
Samsung 14" monitor
Samsung DVD-R/CD-RW combo
Samsung Keyboard
Logitech Optical Mouse
Priya cabinet
FDD
Mercury Desktop Speakers

now..

i have been using Microsoft Windows XP since it released (2001).
the last version used being "Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack II"

it was all fine until one fine day XP just froze....

all efforts after restart were in vain as XP froze during the graphical boot screen itself..

tying safe mode is like playing poker with the computer
"somtimes you get in , other times well....."

i ran System File Checker,System Restore, etc u name it , ive tried it but in vain...

i kept a ghost backup and try it now, the ghost restoration is a success but the system freezes again , as if its the most natural thing to do...
then i tried to re-install...
believe me , ive tried 25 DIFFERENT versions of Windows XP....
ranging 4m the original box retail to the extremely hacked and modified versions...
all efforts failed as here too the installation gets stuck during the graphical installation setup....

then i tried Windows 2000 Professional
same old problem...

then i tried Windows 98 SE
SUCCESS , and now im reduced to 98 only

i try to upgrade to XP
but it too fails..

TELL ME WHAT SHOULD I DO.....

TEARING MY HAIR APART HERE
...

is it a hardware problem or a software problem ?

ive called upon numerous local technicians and all of them seem to be at a loss...

PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE...

I know nothing about the solution but if this problem relates to hardware then how come Win98 is installed properly but WinXP freezes??

Dude The Load on da CPU for windows 98 is comparitively less as compared to windows Xp..So the Cpu gets heated a Bit less in windows 98 .In Win Xp as th load On the Cpu is comparitively more, therefore the cpu gets heated More.thts the reson y Xp fresezes,In xeracon case The Cpu is gettin more heated thts the reason y he is facing the problem or else His ram Sticks may be loose .

Even i had similar problem, the install wont move after checking hardware
but i was able to install xp using command prompt
To start Windows XP at a command prompt, follow these steps:1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.2.Start the computer to an Command Prompt with CD-ROM support. If your computer does not have MS-DOS already installed, or you otherwise cannot start to an Command Prompt in the Boot menu, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:187632 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187632/) How to create a Windows 98 startup disk that supports FAT32
3.Start SMARTDrive if it is not already started. To do this, change to the folder that contains the Smartdrv.exe file, type smartdrv, and then press ENTER. If you do not use SMARTDrive, the Windows XP Setup program may copy files to the hard disk slowly.4.At the command prompt, type drive:, and then press ENTER (where drive is the drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM).5.Type cd i386, and then press ENTER.6.Type winnt, and then press ENTER. The Windows XP Setup program starts.7.Type the path of the Windows XP installation files, and then press ENTER. For example, type d:\i386.

The Windows Setup program copies files to the hard disk. When the files are copied, you receive the following message:
The MS-DOS based part of The Setup Program Is complete.
The Setup program will now restart your computer. After your computer restarts,
the Windows XP Setup program will continue.

If there is a floppy disk in drive A:, remove it now.

Press ENTER to restart your computer and continue Windows XP Setup.

8.Remove any floppy disks from the computer, and then press ENTER. The computer restarts, and the Windows XP Setup program resumes. Press ENTER to continue.9.Follow the steps to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP. If your hard disk contains only one partition, do not delete it from the list of existing partitions. The Windows XP Setup program has copied the installation files to this partition.

You can convert a FAT32-formatted partition to the NTFS file system later.

Setup copies the files that the Windows XP Setup program requires, and then the computer restarts. If you chose to format the drive by using the NTFS file system, Windows checks the drive for errors, and then it restarts. Windows XP Setup resumes in Graphical User Interface (GUI) mode.
10.Follow the steps in the Windows Setup Wizard to complete the installation of Windows XP

Xeracon your windows XP disk is SP2? cuz if you had it since 2001 sounds like u may have SP1. are you using the onboard video? or an expansion card, if expansion try onboard. when u reinstall XP u should come to a screen that states " The following list shows the exsisting partitions & unpartition space on comp. use up and down arrow keys to select an item in the llist" it will give you three options one will be to set up windows press ENTER. do you always select this options, or do you delete the partitions???
siva2guru nice copy and pasting! next time it would be wise to put that in quotes and state where you got the info
