Vista vs Linux

Hey guys. I couldnt find anything similar to this topic. So I decided to feed my curiosity by bringin this up here! I am upgrading my system to make the config as follows:

Intel Celeron D 3.1Ghz 256L2 Cache
512x2 DDR RAM
GA-865GME-775 mbd
160 GB SATA HDD

I currently have Vista RC1 and Open Suse 10.2 at hand. Which one should I go for.

i am not against you in any ways dear but just understand try instaling suse the sweeter option

vista is good to work with but not recommended by many of the geeks .. i have got vista working for me but i am mac addict cant help you with vista

but one thing is there u need to be very cautious when installing vista as missing driver list will be there haunting you

take a chance and gamble with installing both i guess

yes dear its supposed to be an amazing system but once as I suppose you might have/had worked with Linux and Mac you will find that windows is trying to imitate the Mac and Linux in many ways but yet its struggling to stay away from both

if u do a goggle search of drawback of vista u might stumble upon various issues that vista is carrying around ! btw don’t hang on to the old RC1 the things have changed a lot since then...

do a little search here and there and then makeup ur mind with the OS

Argh.......This is so confusing. Vista is good and it will support most of my apps. Hardware support will b a prob. And its just RC1. Plus dont have a single buck in my pocket to buy a copy of the final release.

They say that Open Suse 10.2 is a good competitor for Vista. Plus it has XGL and stuff. So the AERO effects also can be replaced.

And AERO wont work on my comp without a dedicated graphics card.

So maybe Suse is the right option.

Vista RC1 works only till june 1 2007

Go for OpenSUSE, Vista, If installed will kill your PC it will run dead slow. Alternatively you can install Ubuntu and Beryl for 3D effects..

Please post what you will be using it for. If you need gaming, go for Win XP or Vista. If you need Windows-based software, it is better to go for XP or Vista... If you need to work with regular office/home stuff, you can choose whichever you want. Vista is reasonably new and MAY have trouble working with a few older hardware if you have any (old modems, etc). I dont know the current state of Linux (and I am sure they have improved a lot recently), but about 3-4 years ago, I had to go through a lot of trouble configuring many devices (even those that were recently introduced at that time)...

Thanx a lot for the comments. Well, I am a comp Engg student so and I have 2 PC's. One which has XP and Ubuntu. (NOT DUAL BOOT, BUT ON TWO SEPERATE HDDS)

The other is a 64bit Celeron D PC with 2x512 DDR Ram running in dual channel mode.

Like ne comp freek I have to tinker with my comps every now and then. So well, the use is well, to satisfy my whims and fancies. Nothing in particular.

All I know is that Vista has amazing multimedia stuff in it. Linux also does, but I mean Vista is also GORGEOUS!

For a C.Sc student like u, u must install linux without even thinking if it will satisfy u or not! About the Aero and Beryl, u may give ur opinion after u have experienced both of them fairly. Linux is really needed and becomes a good career option if u have experience in LAMP, shell scripts, Linux administration, gcc etc etc. RHCE is usually needed by companies, but even if u have won some Linux certies in linux programming technical fests then that will also do!!

The more u'll get used to it, the more u'll know ur ways urself!!

i agree if ur a comp student then linux is for u coz vista is a complete product where u cannot tinker with it much where as in linux u can learn more about the OS itself ... vista is install and use no issues but in linux u learna few things trying to install the various drivers and softwares ....

however i would advice u to install vista on ur new machine coz then u can enjoy vista, games etc .... linux on ur older machine would run nicely and u can do ur R&D there

Why not start with dual boot and check for yourself which suits you more. Then you can either dual boot or remove one as per your liking.
BTW, what graphics adaptor do you have? You can get beryl/compiz running on older nvidia, ati, intel cards too though you may not get all the features.

You have Vista RC1 not RTM. Don't install it.

My suggestion is that you install Vista RTM & then run Linux in VMWare for some days. if you are comfortable then install Linux on your computers natively.

From the specs I see, u don't have a graphics card. So Vista Aero won't work. However the onboard gfx does has some power to run Beryl I suppose. those animation effects don't matter in a UI, what matters is how fast the UI is.

i would suggest dual boot as mehul.
i myself faced this problem and now i am happy with vista/debian dual boot.

Install window$ first.
always install windows in the first primary partition else windows is weak to know where u installed it. so First window$>then a swap partition for linux=400 MB or less than that>then the linux install partition.
u can install any number of Linux distros and a common swap partn is enough.
for Ubuntu,http://ubuntuguide.org is very informative.and that site got a fedora page too.

Well, my HDD of my good comp has crashed.....Seagate SATA hdds are a big pain. Am getting an exchange with a WD 160GB hdd.

Anyways, got Deb Etch 3DVD edition with LFY. Will try that out. What do you guys think?

I dont mind the tough part of the installation. The thing is I need a distro to manage my general multimedia and all. Stable. Cause this is going to be installed on my main comp. The specs are mentioned below!

the thing is the softwares contained are "outdated"(like Gnome-2.14 while latest is 2.18 etc) which are optimized and provides security updates regularly-perfect for a server.if u want u can see howtos:

Now Debian Lenny offers a little newer packages also with security updates.so Lenny will be a sure try!.Sid means bleeding edge(Ahmm..) packages..

My hdd gave way again These SATA hdd's are a pain. Installed Open suse 10.2 but its tooooo heavy even with my 1GB of RAM. Have DEB Etch and Ubuntu 7.04. What do you guys suggest I do..........
