High CPU usage while copying DVD/CD

My CPU usage shoots up whenever I copy some files from a CD or DVD. I have a Pentium D 2.8GHz cpu and 1 CD writer and 1 DVD ROM. Both the drives are connected via IDE on the same cable. I forgot which was master and which was slave but the problem exist for both. My HD is a sata2 250 GB drive. DMA is enabled for the 2 CD and DVD drives but there is no DMA setting for sata drives. Sometimes the cpu usge is as high as 60%.

Anybody else faced such a problem? I don't know how to fix it. And why there is no DMA setting for sata drives? Please help!!

had a simmilar issue and I noticed explorer.exe was running high as well. Do you play/burn a lot of music/movie files. If so let me know, cuz I had to play around in the reg, delete certain entries and changing certain values. If you don't play/copy music/movies then I probably can not help you out, give me a bit an I will look for the reg values.... here try clearing out these values then reset computer For AVI's

HKEY CLASSES ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\
shellex\PropertyHandler

For MP3's

HKEY CLASSES ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mp3\shellex\PropertyH andler

Workaround #2:

For AVI's
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

For MP3's - Clear out the Value data here:
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\.mp3\PersistentHandler

I also know there should be reg entries specific to the cd rom drive, also I have read something pertaining to upper & lower filters for CD-rom drives, try googling that or wait for a more experinced response ( i'm kinda new here ) but thought I would give you what has worked for me, but yeah serious google the upper/lower filters and how to clear them out.

No, this happens with all types of files.
Never heard of upper/lower filters before. I will give a look.

For SATA, go to ur SATA Controller in Device Manager, make sure u have the optimal settings, enable...



And make sure the DVD drive has DMA enable

OK. I checked the DMA controller in Device Manager. It is enabled but device status shows "No drivers is installed for this device". I put in my mobo CD and clicked update drivers for DMA and after scanning it reported that no better drivers were found than the ones already installed.

Please check what your DMA controller properties shows, and how to find out whether its working.

Best for u i woul suggest these steps.

Remove all entry bellow the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller Uninstall them all one by one then reboot... as Windows will install the defailt or the updated drivers for them and will enable DMA where available !!!

Use some s/w like totalcopy or burstcopy (paid). Burstcopy demo works for 30 days. After that reinstall it.

The IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller is showing allright. I'm talking about the DMA Controller. Its under "System Devices" in device manager. Just check that one and tell me what is it showing in properties. Expand System Devices, click Direct memory access controller and then click Properties. It should show the device status.

And as u are having that issue thats why i suggested that !!! Un-install all entry bellow IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.... and reboot !!!

My BIOS shows nothing of that sort
Also your mobo is nForce, while mine is Intel, so there is some difference in settings. I will try the IDE/SATA thing.

try downloading wintask or somthing similliar, basically it is an advanced version of window's taskmanager... as or my post earlier about upper/lower filters that only pertains if the CD/DVD rom is not properly recognized in windows. what AV / firewall are you using, I am assuming you have ran a scan for crapware on your system with no results? I ain't to familliar with SATA drives so I will steer well clear of that. I would like to see how this turns out though... so I'll wait to see what Choto Cheeta has to say.

today , i had the same prob . here's a direct solution to reset dma setting.

download this file . execute it . and restart comp. dont worry , i used it myself right now . and everything gets back to normal .

ps , dont click on the link . right click and save the the file(target) somewhere on ur comp(ex:desktop) . and double click that file and press ok to execute it.
