Windows 32/64 bit & Linux 32/64 bit

since i have a 64 bit processor i am thinking of shifting to 64 bit processing... right now i have Windows XP and LINUX OS installed in 32 bit mode.

1. Can i run all my 32 bit windows and linux softwares in 64 bit OS ?? and viz ??

2. If i shifted to 64 bit OS and Softwares will their be any improvement in the speed??? if yes then how much ??

3. can i run all my heavy games in 64 bit ?

4. is it really worth shifting to 64 bit ?????

if u have anything to tell about 64 bit plz pour in ur suggestions

Not sure for all Linux, but for Any Microsoft Windows x64 (XP, 2k3, Vista, 2k8) comes with one emulator called WOW64 which allows it to run any 32 bit application with out any issue...

But note, Divec drivers wont work with wow64, u will need dedicated 64bit drivers... !!!!

well with given Hardware yes... !!Multi Tasking is better with x64 as I have run 4GB RAM and 256 GRFX Card there i saw that with 32bit os i need to use PAE switch to make sure all the memmory get detected and the 3gb swicth to make sure programs can work with more than 3gb RAM....

Where as with x64 there is no such hassle !!!

well Game is also a piece of Software, so WOW64 will again come in to the picture to make sure all games run without problem, but issue is with Drivers, u have to make sure, u have all proper 64bit drivers installed for each and every device !!!

if u have such hardware and if u can afford the OS ut self then yes, upgrade to 64bit !!! certainly Windows XP x64 in India is hard to come by and also costlier than the x86 counter part !!!

But saing that I would say, x64 OSes was came in to the picture for mainlly servers, to manage better RAM and Page file and proccesing... how ever as now days Hardware is going so cheap that MS has said that any OS after Vista will only ship in x64 format !!! so x64 is the future !!!

i read that for video editing and for gaming stuff(which includes lot of graphics) 64 bit is not recommended.......

but for faster execution of programs 64 bit is good.

and i saw some benchmarks also between windows xp 32 version and windows xp 64 version.... results where almost same

as seen in here at this forum if one makes one ussless comment that Core 2 Duo is crap and not muck better than Pentium 4.... that too gets in to Google Cache so, when searching some one may land up here too reading that C2D is a crap

this is wat i found just support for extra ram and faster calcutions of numericals... and no much major difference in 64 bit

and this microsoft people just keep mentioning "stuff like improvement in multimedia and graphics" which wont be true most of the times. they just mention the outline and never go in depth becoz the results will be just the opposite of what they are telling.

see x64 is ment for those who would use RAM 4GB or more, with 512 MB or more GRFX card,

now with 2GB RAM and 256MB card, there is not much of a differce !!!

but personally with me, i feel the differce while Running Virtual PC or Running a AutoGK encoding in back ground and may b my nephew play FAR Cry

Right now x64 linux has better compatibility and support than x64 windows.. Im running Ubuntu x64 and there is not ONE thing im missing!

I heard from kalpik that 64bit ubuntu is giving him better performance then 32bit version. Since, I don't have 64bit CPU I cannot verify for myself.
It would be a good idea to search around for this in ubuntuforums.org, too.

64-bit support is available in GNU/Linux much earlier than with windows and is much more matured.
Opinion: While 64-bit Windows is taking its first baby steps, 64-bit Linux has been running in the enterprise for years. To which would you rather entrust your business?

Yes, mostly drivers and some software.. With linux, ALL packages (99.9% if you talk about ubunu) are available in 64 bit version too..

OK... that's as issue, but at this point of the time, as I said wow64 will run any given 32bit software without any problem with Windows, as with drivers, now days, we have good support for that too in x64 windows !!! , but yeah in past it was an big issue... !!!
