You're right, ever since Windows 98 SE and Active Desktop, IE has been integrated into the Windows shell. Windows ME just sealed their marriage for eternity. The best you can do is reinstall IE to the version that shipped along with the OS on the install disc.

Internet Explorer 7 WILL NOT be launched soon. All Microsoft has said so far is that they are not gonna stick to their decision to release the next version of IE along with Longhorn. In the face of stiff competition from Firefox, which has made the IE user base drop below 90% (the first time since the browser wars of the 90s), Microsoft said that it would release IE7 as an update to Windows XP SP2 users before Longhorn releases. Microsoft has not confirmed whether it will be a standalone update or whether it will be rolled into Service Pack 3, which is already in the works. Analysts say the IE7 will most likely be part of the SP3 rollout. All other Windows users, anyone who does not Windows XP SP2, will have to wait until Longhorn to get IE7.
