well mate , me too am studying to give Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist in Windosw Applications .

The basic funda is you hv to give a specific set of exams for a certification , the MS press books r available for each exam , u study frmo them then u register at an authorised center to give the exam(NIIT , UPTEC , APTECH) n when u pass the exam u r awarded the certification

I have done MCP in ASP.Net a year back...it was due to a requirement in office and everything was arranged by HR so dont know much about prerequisites. I had to appear for an online test at NIIT, Camac street and got the result right after the exam. And yes,MS press books are good reference material, though "other" means are also available.
