Default win32 host error

somebody plz tell me what is the cause of this problem, when my friend connect to internet, then after some time an error report comes saying
"generic hoast process for win 32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close .we are sorry for the inconvenience"

when he close the error report then the browser also gets closed, and for some time all the icon of desktop is vanished, the problem is arising with all the internet browser ie IE, Opera, Firefox. somebody told him that this is the problem with his broad band modem, then he connect the intnet with his dialup connection through internal modem, and again the same problem, then he formatted his HD , the problem arises again. is it any kind of hardware problem, plz reply me with a solution as soon as possable.
