A 'Microsoft Only' week
Well all of us are familiar with Microsoft products arent we....but has any1 tried to run your comp only usin the default microsoft products?(no third party apps etc)....Well i did for the last week....Basically My older windows installation got screwed so had to reinstall that is when i came up wid this idea of runnin my comp only on the default set of microsoft products....here is my experience....
First up i formatted my C drive and installed windwos...took me 15 mins(with sp2)...But windows did not detect my motherboard or graphics card so had to install drivers....1 down already...
Next i went to microsoft.com and downloaded the latest updated to make my comp 'secure'
Then i downloaded media player 11, internet explorer 7, and the latest version of direct x available...
right...now i was all set for the big week....no antivirus/firewall or anythin else...lets see how good microsoft is....
I connected to the internet and started my usual browsin....the speeds were nowhere near the browsin speeds i get wid opera...i visited the sited i usually do with opera( no porno or warez sites)... It took only a couple of days for the 1st Viagra and adult friend finder popups to...em...popup!!
And then came the popups which said i had won some competetion and had won a 41" plasma TV....the list goes on....
Next up it was time to use media player...this cud not play even half ot the formats it is SUPPOSED to play....and kept crashin each time i played large files....
My comp kept on hangin hard and cold every hour or so for no apparent reason...probably cos of too much viagra...ops i mean viagra ads
I had not applied any tweaks to the registry so gaming was laggy...probably somewhere spyware is the cause for this too....
Well there more or less covers my dark and dirty experience of 'pure' microsoft'....
Oh and btw i finally had to download opera for typin this tutorial....
So basically microsoft is good only till u hav good third party apps safeguardin it...or else..hmmm....
See ya guys l8r...ive got some formattin and installin to do...
chao..

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
Switch to Vista, I m using it at default settings (mostly) out of the box with some common sence & IE 7 with the default browser
All you need is IE 7 + Admuncher + a firewall + Common sence. Thats it

hmm.. nice one..
but one thing dat i sud mention is dat.. your review .. it seems has got a tag line.. "Nuthing frm M$ is good"..
i dun think any 1 is gonna be happy with just the os' default apps w/o any .rd part apps.
Can u imagine linux w/o any 3rd party apps (though defining 3rd party in linux is a bit tricky lol)... in case of linux... no dvd, no mp3 and even to make matters worse... no proper tech support (assuming dat urnt using a box'ed version of ur fav. distro).. only forums adn irc's... which is evn eorse dan windows!!!...
Nuthing personal.. but dun make ur review by jus pointin out the cons... it makes it seem biased.
on the lighter side... ur machine must be high on mojo and hormones must be ragin after all dat vigra.. err.. vigra adds... lol

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
dude nothing biased here. you PAID RS.6000 (winXP Pro) for an OS and of course you expect the os should do what it supposed to DO. i CAN imagine a linux without any 3rd party apps if i had to do what blademast3r did in last one week and guess what??? without getting any virus or spyware, i.e., without screwing up my system. again i don't want to give lecture regarding mp3 n stuffs coz everyone knows the problem. if you dont know then search the forum. so final verdict is:
Windows+mp3+virus+spyware - privacy=RS 6000
Linux -mp3 - virus - spyware +PRIVACY= FREE!
by d way u don't want to share your Window$ system with your family after all those vigra.. err.. virga, do you?

Linux -mp3 - virus-hardware support for most things + Privasy (u sure?) = free

You're going too far now
Linux without 3rd party apps would just be a kernel, not a OS. So, totally unusable

The first Linux systems were completed in 1992 by combining system utilities and libraries from the GNU project with the Linux kernel, which led to the coining of the term GNU/Linux.[2]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU/Linux
I support ppl calling Linux OS(ofcourse 90% not) as GNU/Linux.as Linux is the kernel, and most parts of software that made the OS is from GNU -formed by software gandhi- Richard M Stallman(RMS).so GNU/Linux.RMS is bad mouthed nowadays for all sort of reasons predominantly GPLv3.poor GOood Man!.

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
Correcting myself.
Wat ever ya fellas are saying about linux is absolutely correct. I've been a real fool all this time.
You can never get any virus / spyware on your system no matter how hard you try while having no 3rd party apps in your system.
You know y?
Let me tel ya y. How will you browse, if you are not having any browser?(remember, no 3rd party apps. Lol)
and about da text based browser... You'll surely get the true web2.0 experience!
So. Wat i think, da equation was totally wrong.
Linux(only the kernel, as no 3rd party apps)-3rd party apps(includes almost everything , the Gui, browsers.. The list goes on )=frustration, dont worry, no ones gonna charge for it.
Its not dat i dont use linux, infact i use it more than windows, but i, unlike you, aint criticising it. If you dont like windows, its your prob, simply stop using it rather than shouting about it.
Looking at your attitude it seems dat cursing windows is a fashion, and as if you get paid by doing it from some rotten fruit selling company.
Its the problem in the user's attitude, not always in the software.

this is the basic point of this review....when one pays that much for the os he shud hav a decent experience without havin to buy any 3rd party software...that is the basic reason why windows is critisized (howeva it is spelt) so much...

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
@Aku....I see no reason for u to get heated up! This is a review section and I dont see any FUD like comment against MS or MS-windows here! The guy just has his experience in his post! And please dont compare a kernel with an OS. U may also try out ur "Microsoft only" week with 1 windows cd and may further compare it with, "Linux only week" with 14+ CDs of Debian or 4+ Cds of fedora, if u want.
Neways, I also agree that Rs.6000 OS shud have everything, but it doesn't even have the basic necessity like an Office solution suite which a free GNU/Linux OS has. IF u wanna move further to propritary linux box then please compare the "MS week" having Rs.6000 Cd with a proprietary GNU/Linux like Suse.......lets see wat u have to say then. There's no FUD against MS in such reviews. In my review of linux it is weeker in gaming area but now has some potential there too.
Neways, there is one thing in the review and that is

|
But windows did not detect my motherboard or graphics card so had to install drivers.....1 down already...
|
Naturally the windows will detect the drivers for the hardware created before its own "final" creation. But if it still can't detect the hardware correctly after the latest updates then certainly I agree its a "down"!

Haven't this been told already that MS gets sued everytime they add something.

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
LOL! Everytime someone brings up the point of Windows' poor out-of-the-box nature, this is one standard excuse you come up with.
I wonder how they were able to bundle in a media player, movie maker, CD/DVD authoring software, firewall, anti-spyware, media center, photo gallery, etc. with Windows Vista then. According to you, others would have sued the hell out of them.
So, though I know you won't pay heed to the request, stop with the lame ass excuses already and face up to the facts.

I know, but if others can pay small fees to MS for including proprietary stuff then they can also form some agreement and pay similary to others! After all Rs.6000 is indeed a lot and an end-user expects everything with that!

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
MS bundled WMP, they got sued by EU
They bundled Save as PDF feature in Office 2007, they got sued
They locked the kernal in 64bit Vista from external intrusion, they got sued.
They paid a huge fine to EU for no reason
XPS was attacked by Adobe

Re: A 'Microsoft Only' week
I can also form a long list where MS sued NOvell similarly and later formed an agreement with it to stop the sueing fun between them. So if they give some fees acc to an agreement that may be formed then no body will sue them.
I'm not saying MS got sued for no reason like u said in some cases is ok. Its all business politics after all. But agreement shud be total having the consent of every governing body over that propreitary system so as to minimise the probabilty of such disputes from occuring.
