how to sync audio and video in an avi file?

hello,
I got a docu video which has this problem-the audio leads the video by @least 40 secs!...this is an .avi file..i tried avisync..but yet to understand its proper use.
help

I remember being able to set audio delay in VLC but somehow can't find the option today
