@thinkdigitreader: Ok for .dat to .mpg conversions, there is a very simple trick. Rename the extension from .dat to .mpg, and that's it! This is because VCDs are encoded in mpg format to begin with, will not work for any other format. You may not believe me, but try it out once.
To change quality settings, or to work with other formats, use mediacoder.
