What is the problem with the downloaded file? It could be corrupt, try to get an alternative download location by searching the file at www.filemirrors.com
I personally haven't tried Avast, but I use AVG and it is pretty fast and an efficient antivirus. Another populour free AV is Antivir PE ...

Some of the available Free Antiviruses:-
AVG 7 Free
BitDefender 7 Free
AntiVir PE
Avast Home Edition
Handy Bits VirusScan
ClamWin
VCatch Basic.
BitDefender and AVG are the best Free AV.

Zonealarm
Why doesn't anyone mention ZoneAlarm Security Suite. It prevents entry of virus in the first place with its firewall and Real-Time Scan. Moreover, it has quick updates.
The only thing i dont like about it is minor upgrades. I have to download the whole 16 Mb file each time i want to upgrade my firewall.
Guess what, i have free upgrades for 144 years. Thanks to crackers but I dont encourage anyone ro use cracks and illegal progs.

Kasperesky is the BEST AV! It is not a resource hog application. Its virus encyclopedia is updated every hour.

Both Avast! and AVG are equally good for PERSONAL/HOME COMPUTERS.
But if your comp is a corporate/office machine or a server, use KASPERSKY ANTI VIRUS or McAFEE. Norton AV CORPORATE is also pretty good.
AntiVir is not up to the mark, at least that's my opinion.
