Default icon not shown in proper way????

hi all,

i have win xp pro SP2 installed in my desktop. of late, i am seeing that my images are shown in a way like unknown file type. though i have set the "open with" to paint application and also ticked the "always use the selected....." in the bottom of the dialog box, i just cant make it show the icon of the selected type. what is going wrong????

all the image file have been tested... jpg, bmp, tiff, others but the same occurs. is there any cure...
