Cool Is archiving a virus safe ?

I recently got infected by a couple of worms (W32.Yautoit and W32.Imaut.J), I did a online scan and found out where they were located.. then i archived them into rar file and deleted the infected exe file...
Is it safe to do so ??
but recently i did a online scan with bitdefender and it deleted those rar files, so though i dont have them any more, but i would like to collect them... if ofcourse it is safe to archive them..
