Default Is athlon xp a good choice??

hi,
i m a college student. i m thinking abt purchasing a pc. my budget is around rs 30000. i m thinking abt buying an athlon xp with a nforce chipset 512 MB RAM, 80-40 GB HDD, CD-R/DVD combo, 2.1 speaker system . i m going for amd considering their lower price. what will be the approx. cost for such an assembled system?? amd is notorious for making the proccessors overheat. since i live in an hostel i cant do much abt the ventilation & other stuff of that sort.

thnx for help

The heat issue with AMD processors is a thing of the past. Intel is the one with heating problems now.

If you think you'll have to keep your computer as it is for 4-5 years, it may be a good idea to go for an AMD 64-bit system, but if you think you'll be able to upgrade in 2-3 yrs, an Athlon XP system will do fine for a budget system.

With existing software, there won't be much of a noticeable difference in performance between a good Athlon XP system and a low-end 64-bit system. There's still no mobo with good onboard gfx for 64-bit.

There's plenty of info regarding price and configuration in past threads, esp in the hardware discussion forum. Prices vary from place to place, here's a guide -

Athlon XP 2600+ - 4.6k
nForce2 mobo with onboard gfx (2 choices) -
- Krypton C18G-400 - 4.1k
- Asus A7N8X-VM - 5.4k
512MB DDR400 - 4.3k (get 2 sticks of 256MB to run in dual mode)
80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm - 2.8k
- (no sense going for 40GB, price diff is only a few hundred)
CD-Writer/DVD combo - 3k
Cabinet, keyboard, basic optical mouse - 1.6k
Monitor (2choices) -
- Samsung 17" non-flat tube - 5.9k
- Samsung/LG/Philips etc 15" - 4.3K
2.1 Speakers - 1k
