My System Freezes :-(

after i added a new hard drive Sata II 160Gb from seagate, my system freezes sometimes, previously i never had any probs. this happens when i am extracting huge rar files (5 gb size), it happned wen i tried to install a s/w somewat size 4gb once again. it also hanged twice when i ran disk defragmentation. i am not exactly happy with the way my new drive is performing.
can anyone of u tell me y is this happening? also pls tell me wat sud be the best config for hard drive (i mean wat mode sud i run and xtra).

if 300 new a higher one
atleast 400w from good company

asus a8n-e mobo with amd 3500+ cpu, transcend 512mb ddr 400mhz. it freezed once again last day while i was transfering data (27gb somewat) from one drive to another. my other drive is 40gb ata internal.
