Question Strange virus - tell me what it is!

Hey guys!

The other day i was helping my friend clean up his computer of viruses. To my horror i found his system very much infected. There was one particular virus which hampered all efforts to clean the system. Whenever i open the browser...and type in anything related to virus, antivirus etc in search engines...the browser is shut down immediately!!! For regular browsing it works fine. However when i tried to go to any antivirus site or search for such software the browser immediately closed down!!!

I tried all browsers, Opera, IE, Firefox etc...all gave the same result.

What could be the virus and how do i remove it?

Hmm, this is common in most of the new virii. Format if allowed/possible. Else download latest definitions and a good antivirus on a separate computer, install it, update the defn, enter safe mode and scan.

I'd prefer Avast/AVG for the quick job.

yes, it's one of the W32 viruses, atleast get McAfee Stinger and clean the system of it. A full system scan by a good AV afterward.

for a correct diagnosis; ples post ur HIJACKTHIS logfile here (or at www.hijackthis.de).

otherwise the standard reply would be : use a good av like avast or avg, update it abd scan ur pc IN SAFE MODE with it. reboot. the scan agin in SAFE MODE, ur pc, with a good anti-spy like adaware or ewido. reboot. and go into normal mode and clear ur pc junk with 'ccleaner' www.ccleaner.com
