Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
Well I have been using both ZoneAlarm and Outpost for quite some time now...
I think Outpost is better...however ZA is easier to configure

ZoneAlarm.
This has been discussed many times over. A simple search would have given instant answer to the question

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
IMHO.. Outpost is the best if you want an application based firewall. Otherwise the default Windows XP firewall is good enough if you have a good antivirus.
P.S. I use Win XP firewall only when im in windows.

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
if outpost is your choice, then there's a Full version available (v2.7 & with key) in other magzine's DVD.
But the downside is that now version 3.51 is available & you cannot upgrade to the latest version for FREE coz the license key is LIMITED to v2.7.
But you get the full version of the PAID software for FREE.
check out the version history--http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/history.php
But still i suggest ZoneAlarm Pro
NO Offence guys.

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
get outpost with ur eyes closed.(paid version)
small mem consumption.
just set it to run in the backround mode.u wont even know its there.
has an integrated spyware scanner.
couple dis wit NOD32.u wont ave any problems.
some programs will have to b given access manually once.thats it.

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
@kalpik, thats what i've already mentioned, its a outdated software.
But its a good choice if you want a good(paid) firewall for FREE.
Dont know why its given with the other magazine, even though its OUTDATED s/w, (not good marketing from a reputed mag. atleast v3. should've been given).
Anyways my VOTE again to ZoneAlarm for Ease of use(configuring) & other features-->cache cleaning, sitelist, & its interface. & i dont know whether this feature is available in OutPost, --in ZA there's a game mode, very nice feature for gamers.
@kaustav_geek dude check out this site & see the Comparo.

The Windows Firewall does the work fine enough, only if you got patience and worthy data on your comp, go for a 3rd party.

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
Windows Firewall is not a good enough solution because it only filters incoming traffic and not outgoing traffic. If by chance a keylogger, spyware, etc gets installed in your system, other firewalls will have a better chance in stopping them from phoning home...

windows firewall is virtually useless. it lacks the basics functionalities of a good firewall like ASKING the user if a certain program should b allowed to access the internet or not. beats the point of having a firewall really
my opinion:
PAID:
Zonealarm PRO
Free:
Zonealrm home

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
@Venom, sakumar79, shaunak: You people probably dont know how succesfull iptables/ipfilters is! There is NO outbound application control based firewall for linux. You absolutely DO NOT need outbound application control! Catching a keylogger is not the job of a firewall, its the job of the antivirus! That is why i said if you have a good antivirus, you dont need a separate firewall. This thread is an interesting read for this argument: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=141174 Also check out: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=139329
@s18000rpm: The site you gave for firewall comparisions is known to be biased (for all reviews they do). http://www.firewallleaktester.com/ this site is known for its unbiased and detailed comparision of outbound application control based firewalls.

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
@Kalpik, no matter how good an antivirus is, a new virus/spyware/keylogger can slip through undetected by it for the first few days/hours of its release... Having a good firewall is a second line of defense in this matter...

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
But in that case, the firewall is doing the job of an antivirus if it has to detect virus/spyware/keylogger.. Exactly my point! That is NOT the job of a firewall Hehe.. Anyway.. lets just leave it at that! To each his own! But i still recommend a read at the links i provided! They are very informative!

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
The best firewall is Jetico .. It will provide you with the best customization options and control over packets travelling on your network.. Only drawback with it is its interface is bit too advanced for a new user.. Me a (happy) Jetico user for 2 years ..

Re: Best firewall(paid/free)
^^ Yup.. Jetico is No 1 at firewallleaktester. It has the best HIPS (application control) and probably the best SPI (packet control) in the market! But then again, it is much too advanced for the average joe..
