Post Difference between avi, divx and xvid

I know there has been a lot of discussion over divx and xvid. But what I want to know that are divx and xvid files simply codecs applied to .avi ?If yes then how can we diffrentiate between all of the three in Windows. Because for all the three files, all it shows is that the file is a video file.
