directx updating problem

The problem is with Directx. I have installed directx 9b that I wish to upgrade to Directx 9c. I have tried to install directx9c many times, but each time at the end of installation it says "components installed are now ready for use" and then when I run DxDiag, it shows directx 9b only. I have tried installing newer versions more than 50 times, but each time same problem occurs. Do I need to reinstall windows XP?

This problem is now quite common and happens to many users. Seems to be some bug with updating 9.0c over 9.0b.
This query has been solved using softwares which remove DirectX safely, and then allowing you to reinstall DirectX 9.0c directly, eliminating the question of updating.
