backup norton virus definations

i've norton 2003 pro installed on xp.. recently i formatted my pc & installed norton again.. i had already made backup of my norton virusdefs in the previous version.i just copied that folder in place of new norton antivirus installation... but norton is disabled now & shows a error regarding virusdefs .. tell me how do i use my previous definations on new installetion???
