Default Volume Icons mysteriously dissapers. DEvice cannot start

For the past couple of days my volume icon on my laptop has been dissapearing and reappearing with eavery startup.

Sometimes it loads and sometimes it does not. Its a very strange thing. I check the device manager and it says that this Device Cannot Start (Code 10).

Ive even uninstalled the drivers for my sound card
Interl(r) 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller

I am currently runnign Windows XP Pro and have Mcafee Anivirus installed.

What can be done? Does this mean that my sound card is a gonner?

I dont get it, as the driver n all install just fine.......its just the message that I get after that which say the device could nto start. Weird.
