Config: Microsoft windows xp (built 2600), avast antivirus, Amd athlon 3000+ (754), 256 mb ram (64 mb video ram). The problems are:- Hanging windows-after I switch on the computer & the desktop is just displayed while the startup programs like avast antivirus is loading. The computer hangs just before loading of startup programs it comes stand still. Even the animated cursor stops. No matter how many times I press ctrl+alt+delete there is no effect .I have to restart it with reset button. Late power down- it takes a lot more time than normal in shutting down of my pc. When I click on shutdown it responds quickly and imitated the kill all process but in last phase when welcome screen displays the msg ‘windows is shutting down’ it really slows down the hdd indicator light stops glowing after 1-2 min it finally power down. Sudden restart- when I use my computer for long time i.e. is more than 2 hrs the screen turns black for 1 sec and it finally restarts. However it is to be noted that after restart the xp keeps on rebooting after the os choices boot loader. However windows-2000 is running smoothly at that point of time with no problems. Noise-sometimes my computer makes hell of a noise even after I installed a chimney fan at the side of cabinet. Noise made is so irritating that I cannot my work on computer. Disappearing Quick launch toolbar-my quick lunch bar is disappearing again & again after each restart and I have to enable it manually each time I use computer. What a painful task! |

Try installing WinXP manager v4.96.1. It shud take care of ur 1st 3 and 5th prb. It will help u overcome some minor & major prb with win xp including startup/shutdown, registry prb. etc.
Cant say much about 3rd prb. WinXP manager link: http://www.yamicsoft.com

try keeping ur registry clean with easycleaner or similar such stuff .
Have an eye on startup programs . [ run -> msconfig startup tab ] That Late sys startup can be due to some startup prog suchas Adobe loader Office loader , and all such task tray stuffs . keep the temp files clean .

With Winxp manager, u get all the tools u can ask for. Try using the registry
cleaner, delete unnecessary files, chk ur startup files, see what processes are running & how much memory are they consuming, etc. But be careful of the tool System repair under Optimiser - System repair - repair system components... I had to format my sys which didnt have any prb after I ran system repair though this mite help u...

From the problem mentioned it looks more of a hardware problem. Check the working of the main components. In future use a good xp manager tool and formating is not the solution.
