You can use analogx to check it out. The http proxy works fine but the pop3 and smtp are hell to setup.

You would be much better running freeproxy but you have to play around with the features or rtfm to get a clear idea of how it works. But once you get it to work, it is the best.

there are many proxy softwares available but only few are worth of mention and can be used for a huge number of client machines.

the important proxy softwares are:

When good freeware options are available, why should we use those?

We are using analogX in our laboratory with 54 computers. Its free, easy to configure and small. It is doing fine here for over an year without any issue.Although some advanced features are missing.

bukaida, you are right, we have offices at over 20 states in india all connected by vpn to the server at Kerala. HTTP proxy is over at kerala and it is analogx. It works just fine. (I mean supporting over 100 systems at any point of time). My only grouse is that it is difficult to enable pop3 and smtp proxy. That is why i suggested freeproxy. If only http is needed then analogx has my vote.

The proxy server is a server which sits between your main server and the client. it can be used for various purposes. The most common use is to share a common internet connection among various computers.The proxy server runs on the machine which has a direct internet connection and the other machines connected in lan can setup their web-clients(IE,Mozila,Opera etc) by simply putting the ip address of the machine having proxy and entering the port number--e.g
my analogX is on machine 192.168.0.1
so in any other machine, in the IE (tools->internet option->connection->lan setting->use a proxy server(check the checkbox) and in the field of address
type--192.168.0.1 and port 6588. click ok and that machine is ready to browse.
The other advantages are --cache of frequently visited pages, applying restriction on particular machine's browsing activity etc. Although these are advanced features (many others are there also, but will take a lot of time to mention) generally found in commercial proxy like win-proxy.
Any proxy server works without caring of what operating system the client machine has or what hardware it is having.

btw guys if you are using analogx proxy, and firefox as your browser, you need to set the http protocols as 1.0.

Iligud ccproxy is commercial but its limited version supports up to 3 user with full features and any 1 can use it until large no of user support is not required. Regarding freely available s\w i wud suggest "SQUID PROXY SERVER" which is best scalable proxy server available beyond what u suggested and is higly flexible and configureable.
