Default Serious Ubuntu problems

i recently installed ubuntu on D:/ drive. during installation, there was an error during GRUB installation. i opted for LILO booting. but then, i could not boot into windows xp.

it asked me for usename and password. i entered it. it showed a message
i mail recieved. it was still stuck in CUI. i couldnt do anything. pls help.

no. but that is not a problem. i had paragorn partition manager installed. i pressed ESC continously during booting and managed to boot in xp. i set xp to boot first with paragorns boot manager. the problem is with ubuntu not working the way it should work. its like working in DOS.

i had downloaded from the torrent link in ubuntu site.
