Default help and support in xp pro not working... pls help

HI,

my xp pro computer is not able to run help and support feature which activates upon pressing F1 on the desktop.

it shows that helpctr.exe is not available.

to make sure, i searched the same on another xp pro machine and then copied the same to my relative folder, i.e.

helpctr.exe to
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

HELPCTR.EXE-19FDF547.pf to
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

i have this 3 different file sized versions
HELPCTR.EXE-19FDF547.pf 15 KB
HELPCTR.EXE-19FDF547.pf 18 KB
HELPCTR.EXE-19FDF547.pf 53 KB

which one is the valid one

now when i run helpctr in binaries folder, it shows to start the service named Help and support service.

for this i went through services in adminitrative tools but didnt find any.

so where can i do the fixing stuff to solve this problem.

help me out...

aken

When the Urlmon.dll file, which is needed to start Helpaccesses the incompatible version of the common language runtime, the Data Execution Protection feature starts and then prevents it from running.

Not sure if this works,

1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.

3. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.

4. Click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

5. Click Add, and then locate the Helpctr.exe file in the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries

6. Click Open.

7. If the Help and Support Center check box is not selected, click to select the check box.

8. Click OK, and then restart your computer.

Do you use AMD 64? This error can be a common feature in such processors.

restart your computer in safe mode and see if help & support works.....

if in case it does not work there either than restart your computer in normal mode and go to command prompt by typing "cmd" in run

at the command prompt type "sfc /scannow"....during the process it might ask you to insert xp pro cd....insert the xp pro cd and it will continue after that

if incase you have sp2 on your computer and your cd is not integrated with sp2 than DONOT insert the cd....in that case we will have to make some changes to the registry...

for now try these steps....

ENjoy...
