When I boot my pc,before windows screen shows up,the follwing message appears:
windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file
I,however, press the enter key and continue to boot. What is the nature of the problem?

A problem of this sort just occured to me a few days back. However I run XP and 2000 and the file of mine which was infected was a ver imp. one in system32\config. Anyway, you must give ur entire configuration and which OS you are using. If it is WinXP then you can use System Restore Facility(through dos) to get your files back, else I can't say now. Don't forget to mention the file system of your hard drive.
Probably its not a virus. Its an os fault if u ask me. Well, do reply and wait for others to help.

The file u mentioned "<Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe" is the file, which required during the boot time.
And somehow it has been deleted?

What u can do is:
1.) Either repair ur windows using Setup CD
2.) Goto "Windows\System32\Dllcache" folder and copy the ntoskrnl.exe file to "Windows\System32" folder
3.) Extract the ntoskrnl.exe file from the Setup of windows XP using Extracter utility like WinRAR
4.) d/l ne boot screen from sites that provide these and copy the file in "windows\system32" folder ( U'll get a new boot screen too )

yes, this problem occurs only by changing the boot screen improperly...

U can safely go to a friend's house with the same version of XP as u and copy his piece of "ntoskrnl.exe" to urs via a boot disk
