Help regarding K9 web protection program
I have installed K9 web protection parental software in my desktop and had configured it to block porn and some other category websites. My brother has a laptop. Is there a way to block the same category websites on his laptop too, other than installing K9 in it [ofcourse only he knows the password for his laptop]. We both share a single BSNL broadband connection.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
Since you guys share a single connection, best option is openDNS. I used it and its good.

Agreed.
I prefer Norton ConnectSafe DNS. It's free for home use and blocks pr0n and malware sites. You don't have to install anything, just put the DNS addresses into your router.Last edited by DeSmOnD dAvId; 10-08-2012 at 04:38 AM.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
Does installing this script require admin rights.? If yes, i can't do it. Any other way.?
My broadband plan is Home 500 combo. 1.5GB limit per month. My brother all the time uses Facebook and Youtube viewing videos..etc. That's the reason
I will try this and report back. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
Either way, it's a wrong way to fix the problem. You should instead try to come to means with him (surely you must be adults about it). And changing the DNS is the safest/quickest way.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
^Just use OpenDNS and he won't be able to even figure out what's blocking. You just need access to modem/router. And the best part is you can control it (modify/remove restrictions) from any part of the world. If you need I can give a tutorial on how to do it.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
I have used OpenDNS. But i faced an issue with it. My BSNL Broadband assigns IP dynamically. Hence i need to update my IP each time a new connection is made. For this, there is a program called OpenDNS Updater which requires Admin rights to be installed in his laptop. Even if i did it (through some way), he can uninstall it easily. I faced this issue when we shared the desktop. I installed it and made restrictions but he uninstalled it to browse the restricted sites. (Don't ask me why i shared the desktop admin password with him, the real culprit is my dad..

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
You have to use DNS updater in order to use OpenDNS. Why do you switch off the modem in first place? Plus the main question is why does your bro removes it? Does he knows about it? If yes, then you're doomed, or tell him not to remove it as its something installed by net company and required for good functioning of net.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
This is what i did exactly.
Does all BSNL limited connection owners keep their modem switched on all day.? When not in use, we switch it off right.?
Before installing the DNS Updater to block youtube, dailymotion and other streaming sites, he use to watch those. After installing DNS Updater, he came to know that some websites had been blocked. He searched for the program (DNS Updater) that made restrictions and removed it. Nowadays every possible solution to bypass restrictions such as this are available in internet isn't it.?
He is a 3rd year engineering student. I don't think this answer will let him believe it.

Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
No matter what you do, he can always circumvent it - You don't have access to his terminal (actually you can "get" that, since you are both on the same network, but "getting" it is a different issue
) , cant inject and protect the hosts and also can't use opendns parental controls.
You could try url filtering in the router, provided your router has that option but it would only stop him as long as he does not find a proxy you forgot to block. (but at least its a viable deterrent to some extent, since proxy speeds would be somewhat lesser)
My suggestion, ask him politely not to visit these sites, back that up with a threat to permanently disconnect him from the bb, and finally filter his mac if he connects wirelessly or disable the lan port if he connects with cable.

^They're using the same pc.
You can try disabling add or remove programs. (don't kill me when he bypasses it
)
You don't need to switch off your modem even for 6 months! (I never did it). And it doesn't eats up your bandwidth.Does all BSNL limited connection owners keep their modem switched on all day.? Re: Help regarding K9 web protection program
Is it.? You are lucky. Some 8-9 months back I use to switch the modem on and go to sleep by 11 after scheduling the desktop to start downloads by 2.10 am. The surprise came when i got my bill. Unaccounted MB's (in hundreds per hour !!) added up. When i lodged a complaint and inquired into it, they(so called BSNL officials) asked me to switch it off when not in use. They checked for changes with respect to MAC Address of my modem but as the MAC address was not changed in their records they advised me so. Do you know, once i complained them of low broadband speeds, they asked me to increase my RAM in order to get higher speeds.

Any other solution with respect to changes in modem level, say like Norton Connect safe.?
You got it right this time
Update: I tried with Norton ConnectSafe. Norton ConnectSafe works only if we change to their mentioned IP address under TCP/IP property settings and not on modem settings. I changed my DNS relay and DNS Client in modem page with Norton ConnectSafe IP's. But still porn sites (for eg) loaded. Only when i changed my TCP/IP property settings, a warning came.
