How many .net frameworks i have to install?

I have installed .net frameworks various versions like
2.0, 2.2.30, 3.1.21, 3.5.21, 4.0.30. all these versions are installed. But still then some softwares like Paint.net, Keepass password manager, hdd guardian are asking me to install some different versions of .net framework.
I want to know, after all,
1. How many .net frameworks i have to install in my system.
2. if i have installed -say 4.0- why then again i have to install the backward version like 2.1?
3. Is there any way or a version so that once i install it, i don't need to install one more version.
4. Is any problem with my OS. My is Windows XP SP3 with all latest updates.

Any one have a solution?

You will have to install all those frame works according to the requirements.There is no single version that can meet all the dependancies.Findout the exact .net framework version requested by the app. and install it.

I am pretty sure many of them have customised versions of these frameworks. hence separate installs

There are no "custom" versions of the frameworks.

That depends. Each app is written targetting a specific framework version.

Because framework installs are not cumulative, unlike Service Packs. .net4.0 install provides for only those features found in .net 4.0

A single install of each version is sufficient. Some apps install framework even if they're already present, because the installer won't overwrite the files.

Some apps are more "intelligent" and perform checks to see if the frameworks are installed.

Some others are lazy (example: couple of my apps) and don't bother checking for install.

sooner or later you might even come up with same problem in case of different versions of Microsoft Visual c++ redistributables(especially if u install a lot of games on ur pc).
Its microsoft crap meant for windows. No solution to it.

OMG, its really horrible. Every framework is around 100 MB to download and install. If i install every such framework my monthly data limit will finish in first 2 days. And What about system performance?

but Digit dvd have only .net framework 4.0 no other versions.

maybe vyom would be talking about diigit dvds over the years which have have almost all .net frameworks versions ever since the beginning

From your first post it seems you have installed most of the frameworks already.Most of the time the app. that requires a particular .net framework will have this framework version bundled along with it's setup file.So if a program is still asking you to install a framework version,try re-installing it.If the setup prog. asks you for the permission to install a .net fw, say yes.If it doesn't then you will have to download this requested version alone and for once only,if you don't uninstall the fw during the uninstallation of the app.

No need to install backward compatible .net frameworks, since the new frameworks will already be compatible with previous frameworks.

If you have installed major .net frameworks on your Windows XP with SP3, then you should have done it in the following way:
2.0
3.0
3.5
4.0

Off course, if all these frameworks were to be installed one after one, monthly internet bill would go high for sure because of downloading these various frameworks.

The only solution to this will be to have the latest operating system with updates to the operating system.

No need to worry about system performance. it is not affected in any ways. All .net frameworks works side by side..so no need to worry about any conflicts.

.net was built with the objective of avoiding conflicts..Search up moe on "Dll Hell" in case you have some time

Install 3.5. It includes 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 too. Then, install 4.0. Only 2 installations required/made.

Thanks for all the replies. as i already said, all these listed versions are already installed. They are working fine. Many other softwares depend on it are working fine. Still then some new softwares asking for more new .net framework versions.
Installing the new versions will solve the problem but how many such versions???
Is there any end?

During installation?Just click yes.It seems to be that you have already installed all of the frameworks,but still setup program asks just to make sure.This isn't something you should worry too much about.
