Steam for Windows not running

I installed Steam from there site. Now, when I open it start updating itself and after few minutes it says you are not connected to internet, steam needs an internet connection to update itself. I am connected to internet but it still ask for a connection.
Please tell what's the problem

Exit steam, Goto directory where Steam is installed, look for clientregistry.blob file, delete it. Restart steam.
