Default very slow bootup + unnecessary hangs + slow splash screen = ???

my dell xps 15 laptop with following config:
i3 380M 2.53 Ghz
4 gb ddr 3
nvidia gt420m 1 gb

it remained on for nearly 5 days..(was trying to download mw3 on a 512 Kbps)
when i finally put it to sleep and next day resumed it, it took half an hour to show the desktop and hung..
while trying to connect to Internet it hung again.
I tried defragging but when i came back to my laptop after 10 min it was off.
the splash screen which displays DELL XPS logo took 2 sec before but now takes 2 mins.
What shall i do?

either hdd error (bad sector), overheat or maybe some system file is missing. can be a faulty OS update too.

Windows 7 or xp?
Can you disable all non MSFT services and start up items from msconfig and see if you still experience the problem or not[it will need a reboot].
Also can you export out system log and share it with us?
[Start->run->eventvwr->windows logs->system]

Try the following in the order mentioned

1. System restore

2. Registry and junk cleaning by Ccleaner.

3. Repair Windows using Recovery disc
