I had ubuntu and windows 7 (dual boot) on my laptop.
For some reasons i require only win xp now and when i tried to boot through the xp disc, i got some blue screen error stating that,
"setup has quit inorder protect your system from hardware damage. If you see this screen for the first time then restart the system else perform chkdsk from your windows...."
When i browsed through net for uninstalling windows 7, some cumbersome steps were mentioned. So i simply went into ubuntu and formatted the partition which had windows 7. .
Now the boot menu still shows the option 'windows 7' and blue screen error still persists..
I want to remove both the OSs and have only xp..
Help me guys..
It might just happen your HDD is working in AHCI mode which is incompatible with XP without 3rd party drivers. Just go to your BIOS, set the HDD in IDE mode and try to install XP.
5. Enable CD/DVD drive during boot (as first boot device)
6. Boot from XP cd and install.

On the Setup of your bios choose the ATA instead of AHCI on the SATA configuration. Then now apply the changes. Then insert your cd on the cd rom. Make sure you have chosen the cd as your first boot device.

SORRY for the above suggestion, I mistakenly thought your laptop to be desktop !! my mistake I apologize for the same.
BTW just a format of the HDD is required to install any new Operating System on it, so. format the HDD using any windows CD during BOOT.

I installed win xp 64 bit last time and for some reasons i dont want that...
When i rebooted the laptop with 32bit disc, it shows the same error again..
Help me...
i had tried the same thing of installing win xp over win 7....but then when i tried installing xp it somehow was not able to detect half of my drives.........when searched on the net the forums said that win 7 attaches a extra param descriptor to the drives which are not readable by xp(being an older version).......

he he dude,
Get Original Windows XP CD from Microsoftstore.co.in
And then install it. PEACE!!
Even if you have currently windows 7 running (any x86 or x64) you will still be able to boot from the original Windows XP CD and format the hdd and will also be able to install the same in it.
Your laptop configuration is ok for XP dude!
(what you are trying to do is now clear to me, and that method is beyond the scope of this forum! Piracy not allow in this forum)

Did you try using an alternate XP installation CD?
Yes ! If he has Original XP CD then he can make a fresh copy of it.
(Microsoft allows end user to make a single backup copy of the CD as per EULA)
If in case his DVD/Rom drive is not working with CDs (it happens sometimes) he can make a DVD out of the XP CD and try to install from the DVD instead.
But remember to write the DVD in 2.5x or 4x speed only.
