Default Drive not availabe in Windows Backup Wizard

Hi,

I have two HDD's installed on my PC.
The 1st one is 500GB and has three partitions, in one of which Windows 7 is installed.
The 2nd one is 160GB and has only one partition. I plan to use this one as a backup drive.

When I go to setup the Windows Backup wizard, in the list of partitions where I can choose to create the backup, it does not show me the 2nd drive partion. It only shows two partitions from the 1st drive.

How do I make the wizard display the 2nd drive as well?

Please help.

Angry Re: Drive not availabe in Windows Backup Wizard

Thanks for the tip techfreak, but I want to specifically use the Windows Backup feature of Windows 7.

I do not want to install any third-party s/w; I did that when I was on XP.
Now, it doesn't make sense to install a separate s/w for a task that Windows provides an in-built feature in the OS.

I had XP installed on the 2nd drive earlier, and so I think Windows Backup does not show it as it identifies some system-critical files on it(same reason it doesn't show the partition on which 7 is installed).

I have formatted the 2nd drive, but still no luck.
I also tried the Disk Wiper tool in CCleaner to erase all hidden files in the drive, but that takes ages to wipe the disk.

What should I do?

try formatting the second drive which is not visible from win 7.........as win 7 adds an additional descriptor param to the drive you format....since you had xp on that drive earlier its not detected by win 7...so try formating it in win 7

^^ Maybe I was not very clear earlier. Let me rephrase.

The second drive is detected by Win 7 and I can also access it from Windows Explorer and other areas. I can read/write files to it. It's just that it is not shown in the Windows Backup options.

And when I said I formatted the drive, I meant in Win 7.
I do not have XP now. Its only a single boot Win 7 64-bit setup. The second drive is empty (as I plan to use it as a back up drive).

Hope this clarifies and I get some solution.

Just make sure you're following these steps:
  1. Right-click the drive you want to backup
  2. Click Properties
  3. A Box will pop-up, now goto Tools tab
  4. Click Backup Now
  5. A window will popup
  6. Click Set-up backup
  7. After a few minutes, another window will pop-up asking for destination.
  8. Now, connect the harddisk and after it connects successfully to the computer,
  9. Click refresh and when the hard drive icon appears, click connect

If the following steps do not display the hard disk, then please report back.

^^ Storage drive still not listed after the above.

I tried to recreate the volume on the disk from diskmgmt.msc, but the Delete Volume option is disabled on the storage drive.

this is how my disks look like.

the G: is the storage area that I want to backup on

Can you try the following and get back with the result:
Got to run->powershell
Type:
wbadmin start backup –backupTarget:g: -include:c:

In this I assume that g: is the drive where you want to put ur backup. Please take a manual backup of all data [if any] on g: before trying this.
Please let us know if this works....
