Yes, it is because a lot of entries and link layers are to be made in system32 so it requires installation.

I don't know if it would work properly, but, try installing MS office in win7 at the same location as windows XP. It will take less sapce and will work in Win7. But can't say whether it will work in XP after that.

It should work coz I have been doing the same thing for past few years.... not with Office10 but with lot of other programs sucha as photoshop cs2, office 2007 etc(which occupy more space).
What u can do is, when u log in win 7, then rename the existing "Microsoft office" folder in the program files to something else(I am talking about the folder which has been installed for XP, office) and do a fresh office installation for win 7 at the same location. Again restart and log in this time in xp to see if everything is fine. If not then you will have to keep any one of the Microsoft Office folders!! If this works then delete the renamed office folder.

@Hansraj
Finally.........It worked!!!!
Did what u told.
I logged in XP after instaling office in win 7, started ms word it worked, so I logged in xp and renamed "Microsoft Office" folder to "microsoft office in 7" and renamed the xp folder back to "Microsoft office" and uninstalled!
then again renamed "microsoft office in 7" to "Microsoft Office" and restarted the PC.
but ms word din start in XP so I simply installed ms office all over again in disappointment!! But I forgot that the "Microsoft Office" folder in XP's Program files is still there! by that time installation was completed and word was working in xp!...I quickly logged in windows 7 and started ms word!
First I got dilogue box saying "Installing microsoft office........" and then voila!!!! MS word started!!!!
What a accident really!!!! but its working in both OS's now and I'm happy!!

Well, as long as its working then its fine or else its not as complicated as you had to do!!! Just to clear the fog, I shall narrate what i have been doing, n its fairly simple.
1. Get hold of pc with dual boot windows system (no office installed in either of them)
2. Instal Office in the first windows os.
3. Restart and log into the other windows os. Rename the existing "Microsoft Office" folder to "To be deleted" (which corresponds to the first windows os) . You can delete it directly also, but its better to delete it later.
4. Install the same version of office in the same location for this second windows platform now.
5. Restart and check now in either of the windows platforms and office should work without a hitch. Delete the folder "To be deleted" now.

Microsoft Office 2010, codenamed Office 14, is a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows,[3] and the successor to Microsoft Office 2007. Office 2010 includes extended file format support,[4] user interface updates,[5] and a refined user experience.[6][7] With the introduction of Office 2010, a 64-bit version of Office[8] is available, although not for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.[9] Office 2010 does not support Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.[10]
