windows 7 .. 64 bit..queries

hi all

i v a amd athlon x4 620 with 6GB of DDR3 memory. i v been running centos 5.4 64-bit on the base and other machines in vmware workstation for my testing and work all these days. now since i m moving away from my home for work i want to install 'windows 7' on the base so that my bro can play games on this.
i want to install 64-bit OS so that i can take full advantage of my rig. primary use of my system now will be to play games, google talk, yahoo messenger, ms office n surf the net.

my query is will games run on 64 bit OS? is it a good idea to install 64 bit windows for home use ..... or sud i stick to 32 bit windows 7??

64-bit Windows is no longer an obscure choice, it has come into the mainstream, and it is perfectly fine for running games. Besides, you have 6 GB of RAM, so you will be wasting 2-2.5 GB of RAM if you go with 32-bit Windows. All 32-bit applications work with 64-bit Windows 7. The drivers need to be 64-bit though, which judging by your configuration that yours is a recent computer, shouldn't be a problem.

All processes (e.g. application executables) running under 32 bit Windows gets virtual memory addresses (a Virtual Address Space) going from 0 to 4,294,967,295 (2*32-1 = 4 GB), no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer.

6GB will make a difference especially on applications that support 64-BIT mode.

Microsoft will NOT be supporting more than 4GB of RAM on any of its 32-bit operating systems, and there is no way to "crack/fix/patch" the system into doing so. You want to use that full 6GB of RAM with Windows, you'll have to get a 64-bit version.

I am using 64bit Windows 7 professional and currently my games are GTA 4, Assassins Creed II, Tom Clancys Splinter Cell Conviction and all the games are running well

Yes, WinRAR comes in 64-bit versions too, so does 7-zip. I don't think Adobe or Foxit Reader comes in 64-bit, but you don't need 64-bit for a PDF reader anyway, unless you have an insanely sized PDF (in GBs). You can use 32-bit versions of applications for which there are no 64-bit versions.

Yup, winrar/winzip come natively for 64bit. However, m not sure about pdf readers.
