What is an avc1 file?

i want to know exactly what an avc1 video file is and how can i convert it to avi with minimum loss in quality. is there any good and easy to use software(freeware or shareware) available to do this.

the video codec standard known as MPEG-2 arose from the partnership between MPEG and the ITU-T, where MPEG-2 video is known to the ITU-T community as H.262.[1]) Some software programs (such as VLC media player) internally identify this standard as AVC1.I think Total video converter can do it.
