Thats a little hard to achieve. As for pirates, they remove multimedia contents(i may be wrong).

7z gives a better compression ratio than rar/zip but the former is not THAT famous.

^he's right, there are a number of approaches, but usually they pull tricks like remove the video demos or reduce the quality of all the images and sounds.

1. They resample the videos to a lower quality.
2. Some/all of the audio is removed.
3. Some/all videos are removed.
4. After that, the files are compressed using UHARC (most common).
5. The resulting data is packed into a ZIP/RAR/7z file for release.

San Andreas in CD not possible, the best compression-full game has been done by the reputed "KAOS" who got it just at 900MB.

Any proof for the same? In my experiments with both the file formats, I have found that on an average, 7z format consumes about 5-20% less space.

^Even i was speaking from THAT experience (remember that magazine of yours?)
Anyway, maybe the results depend on the type of files/contents to be compressed and is not generic.

WinRAR wins rarely. When it does, it does by a small margin. Not worth the money we have to pay for it IMHO. 7-zip = FOSS and also > WinRAR.

I once downloaded Hitman Blood Money which takes more than 2 Gigs on uncompress. But download size was about 400 or 500 MB. Mind it though it took me more than 1 hour to uncompress all the files.

The approach was using a mix of UHARC and Class inject files. UHARC works better on multimedia files than other compressors. But you will need a lot of MS-DOS batch files for this.

7z is far better than winrar in matters of compressing

^^ True, but I still love WinRAR. And it's bugware, so it doesn't stop working... gotta love it

While I actually can't say what the pirates do. But while uncompressing the games, if you look carefully the things happening :

1. They doubly compress files - one time using 7 zip & once using UHARC.

2. They generally delete cut-scene & intro videos which take up a lot of space.

3. They re encode the in-game music into something smaller to pack.

4. They use some sort of "file-injection". I don't know what it is or what it does.

UHARC does that, but i think 7-zip is the best. Try both and decide which gives better for your need.
