Default Safe mode disabled by virus

Hello All,
My system was infected with nissan.exe.
I have been successful in removing the file and registry entry, and I guess the virus is also removed.
Due to this virus i am unable to start PC in safe mode.
My System is P3 with Window 98 and XP-SP2 both installed (Don't laugh please).
Antivirus used is Avast 5 with latest updates. This AV don't catch this virus.

Following are my queries:
1) what infections this virus causes so that i can remove them and be sure the virus is removed completely.
2) how can i boot in safe mode? neither of Win 98 and XP boots in safe mode. XP throws STOP:0xD1 IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error message.

Thank you all.
