Unhappy video blues

i m having a problem with video playback.
during some parts of the video, the frame skips and sound is distorted, but the rest it plays fine.

i've tried it with gom player, vlc and media player classic.
the offending filetypes are .avi and .mp4 (usually high quality hd)

the softwares are not frequently updated, but i installed k lite mega codec pack last month.

im running it on a laptop with :
intel t5550 1.83ghz
3 gb ram
nvidia 8400m gs gpu

havent updated drivers for the last 8 months (college net sucks)

did i mention that the said player consumes almost 60% cpu time and it usually happens in "power saver mode"??? (happens in high perf. mode too, but its very rare)

if anyone can help, it'd be really appreciated.
