Anyway coming to your query. AVI, MKV are video containers, much like MOV, MP4, that supports various video/audio codecs. The most common codec used with MKV is H.264 as that has the best compression ability currently. Reason MKV is so popular even above AVI is because of its features, like few for example......1. able to store selectable multiple audio streams 2. able to store selectable multiple subtitles. 3. DVD like menu system....etc. That is why MKV is the most popular to store HD content compresed with H.264 codec.
AVI container is mostly user with DivX codec
