Cannot access popular sites

I cannot access popular sites like youtube,webshots and few others.Internet is working fine for all other sites.I have disabled firewall and few other services but no avail.I am using windows xp sp3.Please help me out.Thanks..

Try pinging youtube site.

I think the person is on the mtnl connection as most of the time the popular site like gmail, yahoo, orkut, facebook etc do not open. And most of the time the mtnl gateway is also not pinging

Yes I am using BSNL Dataone Broadband,i can ping youtube and webshots.Still i cannot access.Earlier I can but i don't know what happened now.
One more thing i can accesss these sites via proxy.org,but that is very limited.

Looks like some viruses are stopping you from accessing those sites, as you are saying you can access those sites via proxy.

Try to ping www.youtube.com -t and see if there is any timeout. As currently mtnl having same problem for more than 2 months.This timeout really makes internet slow. and even the gateway of mtnl is timeout after some interval of time.

I think it's DNS Problem with your ISP,
Try Using Open DNS Server, or Google's Own Public DNS Server

I think its a virus.. as I have read about such viruses which block sites from opening.
Get your system scanned by a good antivirus...
I also have BSNL dataone broadband.
Exactly same problem occurred and I was unable to open google, youtube, orkut and yahoo.
It was a year ago...
I didn't check through any proxy.. but problem disappeared automatically the another day.

It cannot be a virus because i tried accessing these site on newly installed vista.

Google Public DNS Service is similar to Open DNS Service, I am not sure it will be ISPs' DNS Problem - btw give it a try

Thank you guys i punched in Google DNS settings and now i can access most of the websites.Thank you very much again.And speed also seems to be better than before.
