I think u mean 1x512MB
Nyway Win 7 shud work fine on this PC.....But disable all/some eye-candy(if u want to run Win7)

XP and its predecessors will b ok on this PC.

U can also run many Linux distros(but the light ones not the ubuntu and opensuse)

I guess you meant 2 of 512MB RAM modules in 2 slots, right? I don't find any reason for Windows 7 not to run smoothly on your PC, surely it'll not as fast as Windows XP. My old PC with 1.8 GHz P4 ran Windows 7 perfectly, better than Vista. Check if you have all the necessary drivers installed. Also run a Windows Update from Windows 7.

Otherwise, you can try Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Since you have at least 512MB of RAM, it'll run just fine.

P.S. Did not hear about your Motherboard brand, Necola, ever in my life before. A Google search made it clear.

I would recommend Windows XP, Linux Mint 8, Arch Linux, Fedora 12 for the configuration you have.

Won't be Arch a little hard on him? I mean if he doesn't have prior experiences with Linux.

If u want to stick to Windows Oses then 2000, Xp or 7 are the way to go. Yu shuld chck for drivers as others said coz win7 can run smoothely on a PC with half the power as yours.

But if u can, get Ubuntu(without extensive graphics enabled) or better yet get openBSD [An article for the same is in this month's Digit issue, for OpenBSD]

If he finds difficult we're here to help him, right na?
Also Arch Linux isn't that difficult than what people make of it. Its just that it follows a different process.

I know Arch is not that difficult, having used it from their "Don't Panic" release. But I guess adirawat20 just wants to get his PC running smoothly first, then he should go for Ubuntu without all the hassles. Afterward, he can definitely try Arch. Now don't claim that Arch is as straightforward as Ubuntu, both have their own purposes.

@arpanmukherjee1 - Sabayon is good distro but requires a good system to run smoothly. So we can't recommend to him.

@debsuvra - Whatever! I don't want to argue. Had enough of OS's wars.

^ agreed.. compz fusion requires gfx crd

but the installation manager lets us choose the custom prg to be installed.

moreover linux is not about eyecandy....its about the core stablity (monolithic) and installation capablity that i am practically in love with it

what arch comes packed with i have done that in sabayon in lesser time than any other distro

more over it was my recommendation ,,, be it a begginer or a pro or even the h/w
