Default Websites not opening - Microsoft, AVG

I returned home to find a brand new BSNL 256 kbps net connection awaiting me, but I have run straight into a problem. I use AVG free 8.5 along with Spybot search and Destroy. But I cannot open the microsoft.com and avg.com websites! This also means that I can't update my AVG free anti-virus and can't upgrade my IE from 6 to IE8. I generally use mozilla firefox, but currently I can't get the sites to open with anything. I have already tried the following:

-Run a full anti-virus scan (with old database because it can't be updated!)
-Run a full system scan with Spybot S&D
-Run a full system scan with Trojan Remover

Nothing seems to help, although my PC is a bit faster. Please tell me how to fix it!

I also thought so, and my PC had also become noticeably slower and bogged down by strange bugs. Plus, I didn't like the XP build, so I reinstalled XP SP3 and it is all working like a charm. Thanks for your suggestions guys

PC connected to net and not having AV+firewall = big trouble. Lesson learnt!
