Most of the software you download from reliable site such a softpedia.com, download.com, tucows.com etc doesn't contain malware. In many dite uch a download.com, it's written there that the file are thoroughly scanned for viruses. You can do a virus can after downloading though. But chances are less.

And for your second question, I think you want to know where is private browsing. Start Firefox, click on Tools and click start Private Browing.

After downloading, scan it, thats the only thing u can do. Always download from trusted sites such as softpedia or download.com
