Umm ... How about using screensaver password ? Put a shortcut of screensaver in your startup folder ( Start > Programs > Startup ) . You can find the screensaver file by searching *.scr in Windows directory.
Im not on Windows XP now , but I vaguely remember there is an option which says something like "On resume password protected" .

if i enable 'on resume display welcome screen' in screensaver options.... then this works only when screen saver is triggered automatically.... if i run scr file as u said then screen saver runs in test mode nd nothing happens........
